Manuka Honey from New Zealand is one of the true wonders of nature. It is obtained from the Manuka tea bushes growing on the far west coast of New Zealand. Manuka honey is famous mainly for its antiseptic and strengthening properties. In addition it has other health promoting properties characteristic of honey: it improves blood circulation, lowers blood pressure, increases the secretion of bile, increases the production of new blood cells, increases overall immunity.
Honeys without a MG/MGO rating are generally low-grade honeys without the beneficial characteristics that have made premium manuka honey so much in demand. When Manuka honey's antibacterial properties were first discovered, this antibacterial activity was termed 'Unique Manuka Factor', as the exact compound responsible could not be identified. The lab test developed to test for this activity is the basis of the rating system marketed as UMF®.
